Career & Technical Education Is More Than Career Preparation

Career & Technical Education has evolved into one of the most powerful educational opportunities available to students. Yet many misconceptions continue to influence how CTE programs are understood, promoted, and recommended.

My doctoral research explored counselors' perceptions of Career & Technical Education and how those perceptions influence student access. One of the most significant findings was that counselor knowledge directly affects equitable opportunities for students.

When educators understand the value of CTE, students receive better information, greater encouragement, and increased exposure to career pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and future goals.

Career & Technical Education develops much more than technical skills.

Students gain:

• leadership

• communication

• teamwork

• critical thinking

• industry credentials

• college readiness

• career readiness

CTE should never be viewed as an alternative pathway.

It is one of many pathways leading to success.

Our responsibility as educators is not to choose a student's future.

Our responsibility is to ensure students understand every opportunity available to them.

How intentionally is your school exposing every student to Career & Technical Education opportunities?
